Anti-CCP (cyclic citrullinated peptide) antibody is a type of autoantibody that is produced by the immune system in response to the presence of citrullinated proteins. Citrullination is a process in which the amino acid arginine is converted to citrulline. The presence of anti-CCP antibodies in the blood is a specific marker for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a chronic autoimmune disorder that causes inflammation and pain in the joints. These antibodies are found in approximately 60-70% of patients with RA, and their presence is often associated with a more aggressive and erosive form of the disease. The anti-CCP antibody test is used to diagnose and monitor RA, as well as to differentiate it from other types of arthritis. A positive test result can help confirm a diagnosis of RA, while a negative result does not rule out the possibility of RA.
